TITLE » Sunday “All Hands” in Bellmawr
Sunday, November 25, 2007

On Sunday November 25th, 2007 @ approx 1156 hrs, Taskforce 33 (Bellmawr/Westville/Mt. Ephraim) box was struck for a reported dwelling fire @ 245 Bergen Ave. Ladder 33 arrived to find a 2-story single family with heavy fire showing from the 1st floor, Division A. The “All Hands” was struck w/ Chief Calhoun assuming command and Chief Burleigh as operations. Ladder 33 operating as the 1st due engine lead off with a 13/4”, while Squrt 32 assumed the role of 1st due ladder completing search and outside vent. Ladder 73 (Westville) laddered and vented all floors, w/ Squad 32 stretching the 2nd line. Crews quickly knocked the bulk of the fire on the 1st floor and primary search was completed w/ negative results. Squrt 32 & Ladder 73 encountered heavy heat conditions on the 2nd floor to find fire had extended via the walls. Further extension was cut-off by the (2) companies along w/ the 2nd attack line stretched by Squad 32. Crews from Engine 33 & Rescue 32 performed salvage and overhaul operations as well as secured utilities. Rescue 45 (Mt. Ephraim) operated as the RIT and later supported the overhaul companies. Chief Calhoun placed the fire under control @ approx. 1225 hrs and companies began to take-up within the hour. All companies were available in their quarters by 1500 hrs.The cause of the fire, after investigation by the County Fire Marshal’s Office (CFM-7), has been determined that the fire started from a candle that had fell and lit a Christmas decoration on fire which from that point, quickly spread through the house.
