TITLE » | Rt.295 MVA with Vehicle Fire & Heavy Entrapment

On Friday December 28th, 2007 at 23:30hrs during a heavy rain, Engine 33, Rescue 32, BLS unit 318 and Medic 43 was dispatched to Route 295 in the area of Exit 28 (Black Horse Pike) for a motor vehicle accident. The BLS Unit reported one person heavily trapped in one vehicle and another vehicle fully involved. Chief Burleigh arrived and assumed Route 295 Command. The vehicle that was on fire appeared to have been traveling on Rt 295 southbound and crossed over the median into the Northbound lanes causing the head on crash. The vehicle that crossed over had a total of 5 occupants all were walking wounded.
Rescue 32 arrived and immediately began the working on the extrication. The fully involved vehicle was approximately 10 feet from where the Rescue Company was operating. Engine 33 arrived right behind the Rescue Company and stretched a 1 ¾ water line and quickly knocked the vehicle fire down. At one point during the operation there were 5 hydraulic tools in use. The female victim had her left hand crushed between the driver’s door and the “A” post of the vehicle. The dash had collapsed around her.
The companies completed the extricated in 38 minutes and the patient was transported to Cooper Trauma Center in critical condition. Companies were back in service at 00:32 hrs. The accident in under investigation by the NJSP Bellmawr Barracks.
